Why CERTIFIED interpreters for medical care emergencies?
RID has established minimum skill and knowledge requirements for interpreters to meet and to maintain. These are, in part, for the purpose of quality assurance. The communication that occurs between medical personnel and Deaf/Hard of Hearing individuals during emergency medical situations can be daunting in speed and complexity. Because of this, accuracy is imperative. When family members, friends and unqualified interpreters are asked to interpret in medical situations, even though qualified professionals are available, ALL parties are disserviced. Hospital staff, patients, and family members all have a legal right to immediate and accurate communication.
